The CAMBER project has reached another important milestone in the Cascais pilot with the successful completion of a dedicated traffic counting campaign aimed at strengthening the project’s data-driven approach to road safety and infrastructure management.

Conducted in May 2026 across selected road sections in the municipality of Cascais, the campaign focused on measuring traffic volumes and vehicle speeds using static automatic counters. Data was collected during both daytime observation periods and continuous 24-hour monitoring, providing a comprehensive picture of traffic patterns under different operating conditions.

The collected data will play a key role in supporting the calibration and validation of crowdsourced vehicle-sensing datasets, helping to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the information used within the project. It will also contribute to the estimation of Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) values, an important indicator for several CAMBER pilot demonstrations and safety assessments.

By combining traditional traffic monitoring techniques with innovative data sources, the Cascais pilot is helping to build a more robust understanding of how roads are used and where safety improvements can have the greatest impact.

This latest campaign builds on earlier pilot activities, including the installation of Mobileye devices on four hydrogen-powered buses operated by Cascais Próxima. Together, these complementary data collection efforts are creating a rich evidence base that will support the development of innovative safety assessment methods, with particular attention to vulnerable road users.

The traffic measurements are currently being processed and validated to ensure consistency and suitability for further analysis. Once integrated with other data sources collected in the pilot, the results will contribute to the development of CAMBER’s data-driven tools for safer and more efficient road management.

As activities continue across the Portuguese pilot, CAMBER remains committed to demonstrating how innovative technologies and high-quality data can support safer, smarter and more sustainable road infrastructure across Europe.

The Croatian pilot is making strong progress as the data-collection campaign continues across the selected test locations. The activities focus on gathering detailed information on road conditions and driver behaviour both before and after the implementation of planned measures, enabling a reliable comparison of their impact.

Baseline data collection at the first pilot location has now been successfully completed, while activities at the second location are currently ongoing. These efforts represent an important step toward understanding the current state of road infrastructure and driver interactions with the road environment.

Assessing road infrastructure and traffic conditions

During the pilot activities, the project team collected a range of data describing the existing road conditions. This included assessments of traffic sign and road marking quality, pavement roughness, and traffic flow speeds. Such measurements provide essential input for the project’s analysis and will later support the evaluation of the effectiveness of the implemented safety measures.

Analysing driver perception with eye-tracking technology

A significant part of the data collection involved the use of eye-tracking glasses, which allow researchers to analyse how drivers visually perceive and interact with the road environment while driving. In total, 30 drivers completed the test route using the eye-tracking equipment, providing valuable information on where drivers focus their attention and how they detect road signs, markings, and other elements of the traffic environment under current conditions.

Supporting the evaluation of future safety measures

The data collected during this phase will serve as a baseline dataset for the Croatian pilot. Once the planned measures are implemented, the same routes will be analysed again in order to compare driver behaviour, perception, and road conditions before and after the interventions.

These activities contribute to CAMBER’s overall objective of supporting data-driven road safety improvements and more efficient maintenance of secondary roads across Europe.

The city of Trikala is progressing toward a significant milestone in the CAMBER project, as preparations are underway for a series of real-world demonstrations set to begin in 2026. These activities will introduce innovative digital tools designed to improve the safety, quality and maintenance of urban streets, with a particular focus on cyclists and other vulnerable road users.

Cyclist-based data collection for smarter safety insights

A central component of the Greek pilot is a mobile platform developed by ICCS, which will collect data directly from cyclists’ smartphones as they travel through the city. Using a combination of GPS tracking, video, and motion sensors, the platform will detect cracks, bumps and surface irregularities across bike lanes and streets. AI and Machine Learning (AI/ML) techniques will analyse this information, and through the iRAP framework, translate it into actionable safety insights and performance indicators.

ICCS will provide the digital platform and API that make this information accessible to local stakeholders. Working closely with eTRIKALA, the system is expected to integrate with the municipality’s control room, enabling faster and more informed decision-making on street maintenance and infrastructure planning.

Building a digital twin for enhanced road management

Beyond the urban centre, CAMBER is preparing the deployment of AIT’s RoadLab campaign along a 5 km corridor to gather high-precision “ground-truth” data. This one-time campaign will generate a detailed point cloud of the road environment, forming the foundation for a GIS-based digital twin.

This digital twin will combine high-accuracy measurements with georeferenced photos, offering a rich, real-world visual and analytical representation of the corridor. The model will feed into advanced simulation environments developed by ICCS, supporting the testing and evaluation of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) performance under realistic conditions.

Together, the cyclist-based data platform, Digital Twin, and simulation tools will provide Trikala with a comprehensive framework to assess how infrastructure and mobility technologies interact with real-world conditions. This integrated approach will support better-informed decisions on road maintenance, safety improvements and future mobility planning.

With pilot activities scheduled to begin in spring 2026, the CAMBER project is laying the groundwork for a safer, smoother and more resilient mobility network in Trikala, benefiting all who walk, cycle or drive through the city.

The CAMBER project has made important progress in Portugal with the completion of the installation of Mobileye devices on four hydrogen-powered buses operated by Cascais Próxima. These buses serve public transport lines 38 and 43 in the municipality of Cascais and will play a central role in the Portuguese pilot activities.

Using real-world operations to improve road safety

Throughout daily service along urban routes, the Mobileye-equipped buses will continuously collect data related to road conditions, traffic interactions and safety-relevant events. This real-world data will support the Cascais pilot in developing and testing new methods for assessing safety levels, with a focus on vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as pedestrians and cyclists.

As part of CAMBER’s broader mission, the Portuguese pilot contributes to building practical, data-driven tools that help cities better understand safety risks and design more effective, proactive interventions.

Hydrogen buses as a platform for innovation

By integrating the sensing devices into hydrogen-powered buses – already an environmentally friendly mobility solution – the pilot combines sustainability with advanced safety technology, demonstrating how public transport fleets can contribute to next-generation road safety analysis.

More updates from the Portuguese pilot will follow as data collection progresses and results emerge.
